A River Ebro Monster
Rich Seeds was out in the boat, right over the other side of the river baiting up, when the right hand rod suddenly started
to nod a few times, then it tore off! As I pulled into the fish it slowly came towards me, so I was gradually gaining line, then
all of a sudden it ripped off. As I hung on for dear life with the clutch fully locked down, it was quite clear there was no
stopping this beast! I was running down the bank to try and gain some line back but it was taking line quicker than I could
move! I shouted to Rich to hurry back in and also informed him that there was only about 4 turns of braid left on the reel,
and with that the spool ran out and ‘ping’. Luckily Rich was back to the bank by now and we could see the braid floating on
top of the water, so we had this idea of tying it to the boat and trying to gain enough line back so we could thread it back
through the rod and tie it back on to the spool of the reel.
He set off taking the rod with him; he would gain some line but then be pulled another 100yards down river as the cat was
much stronger than he was! Eventually he gained enough line to thread the rod back up and then fasten it back to the
spool. He was gaining line quickly on it and basically winched himself out to the fish. Once he made it out to the fish he
simply couldn’t move it so just sat in front of a swim which was occupied by a chap called John who was guiding 6 anglers;
they were not best pleased!
In the mean time I had helped one of our clients land an 88lb so gives you an idea of how long this battle was taking! As
Rich shouted for help John got his motor boat out and made his way out to Rich, they tied the two boats together and John
slowly dragged Rich and the cat towards the bank with Rich holding on and the cat still winning! After an hour and a half
battle they made it back to bank.
The fight continued on the bank but the big cat was tiring now after a total brawl of two hours As Rich got it in the edge we
still hadn’t seen it and I was crouched down waiting to ‘glove’ it. Then I saw the leader and slowly followed it down and put
my hand inside its mouth. I then realised how big it was! Walking back with it and trying to pull it out of the water I had to
shout for someone to give me a hand as it was far too heavy for me to get out on my own.
We eventually got it out and into a weigh sling; it took five of us to get it up on to the top of the bank. As we lifted it up she
dialled the scales round to finally settle on 178lb which is a massive fish for the top lake near Caspe!
